Latin Night Provides Tasty Treats While Helping Families in Chile
March 27: What could be better than getting together with friends, meeting new people, enjoying great food, helping an important cause while dancing the night away. That briefly sums up the Latin Night for Chile event that took place on March 27th.
Angelica Powell and her family was the inspiration behind the dinner and entertainment event which was held in the newly opened Skeena Diversity Centre. Angelica came to Canada from Chile. She has lived in Terrace for the last decade. Her family was directly impacted by last month's earthquake in Chile as they live in the epicentre of the quake and their whole neighbourhood was destroyed. “My first reaction was to jump on a plane and head there to help out. I felt so helpless being so far away.”
The event was organized by Skeena Diversity's Cultural Advisory Council and brought together many families that come from Latin American countries who prepared the feast of tasty dinner. Tickets were sold throughout the community; items were donated for live auction. The event raised over $1,200 which is incredible for such a short timeline.
“I'm so grateful to the Terrace community, my family and friends! They made me feel like I can do something. The funds will be going directly to the people through the grassroots efforts as the families prepare for winter. I can't express how much gratitude I feel for everyone who helped.”
If you would like to contribute to the support of victims of the Chilean earthquake, you can still contribute to the account #7177454 set up at the Northern Savings Credit Union.
Skeena Diversity Society is busy planning future events at its Centre starting with monthly potluck dinner and presentation events to be held on the last Saturday of each month at the Skeena Diversity Centre located at 4617 Lazelle Ave. Skeena Diversity is looking for anyone who would like to share stories and experiences from their life, travels or traditions.
